Abstract

Let’s face it: Most of our students are not embracing the classics. In fact, “Few words strike more fear in the hearts and minds of high school students than the English teacher’s announcement, ‘We will be reading a classic’” (Porteus, 2009, p. 16). As current and former teachers of high school sophomores, we have endured the experience of watching our students cringe at the thought of reading Shakespeare and wince at the words of Twain.
