Abstract

Van Maanen (2011: 2) writes that “fieldwork is one answer–some say the best–to the question of how the understanding of others, close or distant, is achieved.” Ethnographers immerse themselves in a culture (typically) not of their own, to achieve an in-depth understanding of that culture.
