The Red Thread Women’s Development Organization was formed in Guyana in the mid-1980s by seven activists in response to the country’s political situation. Nurturing women to become politically engaged was, in their minds, a way to oppose factionalism and repression. Initially, the group of women worked in the community, providing basic education to women in craft design and production (hence the name Red Thread).
