Abstract

Without fear of contradiction, John Stuart Mill (1806–73) is acknowledged as an exceptional philosopher, political scientist, educationalist, social reformer and art lover. As a Utilitarian, Mill believed that human happiness involved the principle of utility. Utilitarianism is a theory that sets out to give an account of the permanent cause of our common and social human happiness in the world and of what stands in its way in terms of pain (Mill, 2007, p. 6–7).
