Abstract

In his groundbreaking book The Souls of Black Folk (1903), W.E.B. DuBois, asked a rhetorical question that seems as relevant as ever today: How does it feel to be a problem? To be sure, there is a profound difference between having a problem and being a problem. While all may have problems, Black male existence itself is a problem within a white gaze (DuBois, 1903).
