Abstract

Transition from one school to another may be a stressful time for pupils, especially when it also involves a perceived lack of continuity of curriculum and teaching approaches. Many schools are using ‘bridging units’ (DfES, 2006, p.4) which are taught at the end of primary school (10–11 age range), continued through summer schools or independent learning packages and then re-visited by teachers in the first year of secondary school (11–14 age range) to provide continuity and progression.
