Abstract
In 1893, Teachers College, Columbia University, awarded the first Ph.D. in education. Almost as soon as the ink was dry on that student’s diploma, questions began to arise as to whether an academically-oriented “research degree” was appropriate for professional schools such as education. About three decades later, Henry Holmes, the first Dean of the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University, gave his answer to these questions.
