Abstract
For almost two years we were engaged with teachers from four secondary schools in historically disadvantaged communities on the implementation of citizenship education in schools. This project culminated in the design, development, production and implementation of a ‘manual’ for rethinking citizenship education in schools. On the one hand, having produced a ‘manual’ for implementation implies having conjured up some preliminary thoughts on citizenship education in collaboration with teachers, particularly on how students can be initiated into a discourse of citizenship education.
