Abstract
Recently, I was asked by a relative to accompany her to a hearing about her experiences of abuse at a Canadian Indian residential school. The hearing was part of the Independent Assessment Process of the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement.1 The hearing involved an adjudicator and lawyers: for the federal government and for the claimant. In addition, the claimant had an elder and a relative present. I was the relative.
