Abstract
Over the last decades, educational research in Europe has paid little attention to the costs of higher education and how they affect students’ decisions on whether to enroll in higher education. Researchers and policy makers seem to assume that the costs of a college degree play a minor role in enrollment decisions, and that other factors such as information and academic preparation are more important explanations for why some high school graduates enroll in higher education and some do not (e.g. Winter et al., 2010). The situation is very different in the U.S. and other countries discussed in this volume where the effects of college costs have been a prominent and well-researched issue for many years (e.g. Leslie & Brinkmann, 1987; Heller, 1997).
