The Finnish Model of Higher Education Access

Does Egalitarianism Square With Excellence?

  • Chapter
Fairness in Access to Higher Education in a Global Perspective

Abstract

Recently, interest has grown in the Finnish education system, encouraged by the success of Finnish students in PISA surveys. While the results of surveys undertaken by the Programme for International Student Assessment of the OECD (PISA) suggest there is no single key factor behind Finland’s high performance, a whole network of interrelated factors from free school lunches to the social and cultural context of learning and of the entire education system have been brought up to explain the “miracle” (Välijärvi et al., 2003, pp. 3, 52–53).
