Abstract

On September 24, 2009, several thousand students, workers and faculty went onto the streets at UC Berkeley and other UC campuses. The date marks the beginning of a movement to defend what was once America’s finest public education system. The Berkeley campus is well known for its protest tradition, but it would be a mistake to label these mobilizations around public education with the label of “Another Contentious Berkeley Action” for several reasons. To begin with, the Movement in Defense of Public Education can be regarded as one of the forerunners of the Occupy California Protests.
