Learning to Believe as Algorithm and as Heuristic

Abstract

My faith started with my mother. My pleasure in thinking with my father, who used to teach us mathematics over our Sunday lunches. One day, my father wanted to make us understand that counting with letters was a quicker and much smarter way of counting than counting with figures. I don’t remember my exact age, but I was still in primary school. Instead of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing numbers, my daily exercise at school, one could use letters – and open new worlds! My father chose no less than Pythagoras’ theorem to illustrate this.
