Abstract

When the editors honored me by asking me to contribute a letter to this book, my first thought was to accept their invitation and my second thought was to communicate about a matter of urgent importance. I feel I shall have great difficulty conveying my thoughts and ask that you make my task easier by trying to get at my meaning. Remember, I do not offer theories but merely seek to clarify problems. My fear is that we are held captive by a vision of education. In what follows, I will say something about this vision and then put forward an alternative one that, I hope, will encourage you to see things differently.
