The Invention of Humboldt in Western Higher Education Systems

Abstract

In 1970 over 100 renowned scholars from 53 universities in 9 countries met in Norwich, England. Their mission was nothing less than the moral renewal of the higher educational systems in North America and Europe. Among those present were Edward Shils, professor of sociology at the University of Chicago, the Italian political scientist Giovanni Satori, and the German journalist and intellectual Richard Lowenthal (DUZ, 1973, p. 986).
