Abstract

Currently I work in an English university as Research Degrees Leader, and previously as coordinator of a Doctor of Education program in an Australian university. These roles have provided many an opportunity to draw on my experiences and observations of university procedures and policies as a doctoral student. Doing a Ph.D., a Doctor of Philosophy, may be viewed as serving an apprenticeship and thereafter modelling one’s own work and approach on the learning from that experience. There are aspects to utilise and build on, others to avoid at all costs. The experience of undertaking a doctorate is a consuming one which requires determination, discipline and dedication.
