Abstract
Three aspects of the background for the MARBLE project are presented in the first chapter. The first is related to the research field of teacher professional learning, attitudes and beliefs. The second is found in the mathematical needs of students both for citizenship and for further study in mathematics. Finally, the educational milieu within which the MARBLE project took place is described.
