Abstract
The study of the natural environment has a history as old as science itself. It was through early people’s natural curiosity of the environment that science emerged and developed. Today, the study of the natural environment continues to have a strong focus in science as we try to understand and predict the impacts of the many environmental challenges caused by an ever-expanding world population. As a scientific research tool as well as a science education pedagogy, the study of the natural environment is an inquiry undertaken by both scientists and educators, albeit with the different objectives—generation of new knowledge or the teaching of that knowledge, respectively.
