Abstract

In his widely-acclaimed book, The Coming of Post-Industrial Society: A Venture in Social Forecasting (1973), Daniel Bell made three predictions that, if fully realised, would have major implications for the nature and role of universities in the contemporary economic and social order. His first forecast was that, whereas capital had been the dominant factor of production in industrial societies, in postindustrial societies that place would be occupied by knowledge.
