The history of Chinese higher education is long, and marked by numerous milestones that help illustrate the formulation of the country’s contemporary tertiary education system. A review of this history depicts how various influences, priorities and circumstances have converged to form a system that, while having characteristics in common with other national systems, is unique in sometimes glaring and at other times subtle ways.
