Abstract

Takoa Lawson was my colleague in the Summer Scholars Program the summer before sabbatical. He was also a wonderful high school science chemistry teacher while I was on sabbatical, although at a different school. Takoa has always been a dedicated and caring teacher. He works hard to do the best for his students. I have always admired the way he constantly tries to improve his own understanding of both science and teaching. He also cares deeply that the learning of his students is real. As an experienced high school teacher, he knows and has seen a lot. One frustrating day in January, I shared my concerns1 with Takoa about preparing my students for a test that covered too much material and did not emphasize the many reasoning and process skills that I valued most.
