Abstract

‘Quality’–and more recently ‘excellence’–has become a key word in higher education worldwide. The rise of the ‘evaluative state’ (Neave & Van Vught, 1991), the demand of greater accountability for higher education institutions (Brennan and Shah, 2000), and the influence of New Public Management ideology in the field of higher education (Amaral et al., 2003) are major evolutions that account for an increasing attention to quality in teaching and research.
