The Cultural Pedagogy of Tarot

Abstract

The fifteen readings described nearly verbatim in the preceding chapter together with the participants’ immediate feedback on their readings represent the Tarot hermeneutic method in practice and not only in theory. We can see that symbols render themselves interpretable at the everyday level of our regular lives, and we do not have to employ an esoteric vocabulary at the level of practice. Tarot hermeneutic is egalitarian and is able to reach people in the middle and muddle of their actual lives. Yet, because it represents our confrontation with the unconscious it will surely “challenge deeply held beliefs or ways of life” (Noddings, 2006, p. 1) by virtue of transformative learning that leads us out of our old habits of thinking and acting in the world.
