Abstract
The chapter critiques dominant discourses and debates pertaining to cultural identity in the global era. It analyses current discourses related to globalisation, ideologies, cultural identity, and the state, and approaches to constructing national, ethnic and local identities in the global culture. It examines the ambivalent and problematic relationship between the state, globalisation and the construction of cultural identity, and the nation-building process. The chapter also analyses conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches applicable in the research covering the state, globalisation, nation-building and identity politics.
