Abstract
Ningaloo Coast is in Western Australia, on the Indian Ocean. The site tells an extraordinary story of biogeography, climate change, assembling of continents, opening of oceans, and environmental conservation. Its dramatic setting and rich biology reveal a long record of continental change, isolation, and evolution. Annual gatherings of whale sharks occur, making it one of the best places in the world to interact with the biggest fish in the world. The coastal segments present subterranean water bodies with a substantial network of caves, conduits, and groundwater streams. The property contains exceptional underwater scenery, including coral reef structures, contrasting with the vivid colors of the arid terrestrial landscape.
