Abstract

This chapter forms a general introduction to the climate system. It defines the different layers of the atmosphere and their properties. General concepts on the atmospheric composition, the Earth’s radiative budget, the water cycles, and climate change are introduced. Finally, this chapter also offers a road map to the other chapters of the book.
