Abstract

In this paper, we are mainly concerned with the development of the first theory applied to machines made by Lazare Carnot (1753–1823). The two Carnot’s essays on machines previously published before Fundamental Principles have in common the use of the concept of work as a fundamental step to build that theory of mechanics within the framework of Rational Mechanics. Carnot accomplished this task by starting to develop his new theory applying d’Alembert’s (1717–1783) principle and crowning his project with Principes Fondamentaux de l’Equilibre et du Mouvement published in 1803.
