Abstract
Three incidents concerning caregivers and patients from different cultural groups illustrate medical challenges. A brief history of medicine in Africa during the colonial era illuminates some of the difficulties. I introduce the concept of medical pluralism and related ways of thinking as a synergistic solution. Finally I offer an approach to an integrative medical encounter.
