Abstract
After showing that the symmetry operations of a crystal form a group, we show how to go over from this group to the space group characterizing the crystal structure on the microscopic scale, and then to the point group, which governs its macroscopic physical properties. The rigorous proof is preceded by an example which allows the reader to grasp these notions intuitively.
