Polarization of Light by Crystals

Abstract

In this chapter, we show how crystal birefringence can be used to change the polarization of an electromagnetic wave and thus obtain light in a well-defined polarization state. Various devices using this birefringence are described: linear polarizers and phase shifting plates.
