Abstract

This chapter introduces the displacement gradient tensor, or distortion tensor, which describes the most general distortion of a crystal. This field tensor of rank 2 is shown to decompose into the strain tensor, which is symmetric, and an antisymmetric tensor associated to a rotation. The last section is devoted to the thermal expansion of crystals.
