Abstract
Gene control at the level of transcription initiation constitutes only a portion of the regulatory mechanisms used by bacteria. Many different posttranscriptional control mechanisms have been identified, regulating transcription initiation, elongation, and termination. A number of discoveries have revealed that regulatory RNA structures are often used for posttranscriptional control of essential genes.
