A Case Study: Potential Health Risks Posed by Eating Eggs from Free Range Chickens in New York City

Abstract

As agriculture continues to expand and diversify in urban areas, new questions about risks posed by soil contamination are emerging. Chicken keeping is a pursuit that is increasing in popularity in many of our urban centers, and a number of US cities have reversed earlier bans on keeping chickens. In New York City (NYC), where it appears likely that there are now thousands of city chickens, some chicken keepers began asking if soil contaminants could be getting into their chicken eggs.
