Abstract

Chapter 1 of Re-Becoming Universities contextualizes and describes the contents of the book based on the study: Change in Networks, Higher Education and Knowledge Societies (CINHEKS). The CINHEKS study was a six country international comparative study focused on the way in which contemporary higher education institutions and networked within and between networked knowledge societies. The countries in focus are Finland, Germany, Portugal, The Russian Federation, The United Kingdom and the United States of America.

In Chap. 1, the context of the study and the contents of the book are described in thematic terms, focusing on the three sections of the text: Part I. Theory, Design and Context; Part II: Within and Between Higher Education Institutions and Part III: Comparative Findings. In terms of research design, the comparative study was based on a complex, mixed-methods matrix combining both sequential and concurrent empirical elements including policy analysis, comparative case studies, the use of surveys and social network analysis. The study was carried out in cooperation between the European Science Foundation and the National Science Foundation.
