Abstract

Algae have an enormous variety of form, sizes and colours. The characterization of algae is mainly based on features such as thallus structure and morphology, ultrastructure of the cell, the pigments, photosynthetic products, cell wall composition, reproduction and growth patterns. These features are helpful in identification and cultivation of various algal species for human and animal consumption, in understanding the role of algae as primary producers, for nutrition and as renewable natural resources (biofuels and biochemicals) for humans. This chapter provides an outline of major techniques used in the study of algae involving the use of hemocytometers, various microscopes, flow cytometers, spectrophotometers and high performance liquid chromatography. We also look at the field based and laboratory based variants of these techniques currently used to observe and study algae.
