Abstract

As well as in the text edited by Winter (VBG Vol. XXV, 1853) and the identical Semarang edition of 1884, the story of king Aṅliṅ Darma is available in numerous manuscripts. Some of them contain the same, or nearly the same, text as the printed version, or again fragments of such a text, while others sometimes display remarkable divergencies. These MSS. are the following:

  1. A.

    Manuscripts in Public Libraries

    1. 1.

Cod. or. 1794 Leiden, described by Vreede in Cat. Jav. en Mad. hss. der Leidsche Universiteits-bibliotheek, pp. 154–156. This MS., formerly the property of the one-time Delft Academy, consists of two volumes folio, together containing 802 pp. It originates from Surakarta and was written in A.J. 1773 (A.D. 1845). The text shows only insignificant differences from Winter’s edition. Vreede’s independent summary of contents — not taken from Winter’s résumé of the story — is very brief and unsatisfactory. It was righdy censured by Brandes in his review of Vreede’s Catalogue (T.B.G. Vol. 35 (1892), pp. 447–451).

    2. 2.

Coll. Berg-Maurenbrecher, CB 138, pp. 82–146, Leiden Univ. Library; (Pigeaud, Lit. of Java, Vol. II: 781). A copy in modern cursive script of an old defective MS., copied in Malang, East Java in 1933. 20 Cantos, Macapat verse; beginning and end are missing. The MS. begins with the episode when A.D. transformed into a měliwis, is staying in the house of Ki Gědut near the marsh where he was caught and eventually is taken to the king of Bojanagara. The final stanza is the last stanza of Canto 43 in Winter’s edition.
