Abstract
The article discusses how economics can be applied to the analysis of environmental problems, with particular emphasis on cost-benefit analysis. It is argued that economics can play an useful role, provided it is sensibly linked to an understanding of ecological processes and the institutional environment that affects decision makers, as either individual resource users or politicians.
