Part of the book series: Ecology, Economy & Environment ((ECEE,volume 1))

Abstract

The final chapter focus on some of the recent trends in linking the natural environment and the economy which have evolved, particularly in the interface of ecological and economic sciences. We have divided the chapter into two parts. The first part provides a brief overview of some major perspectives on environment in development, and relates the previous book chapters to these perspectives. The second part emphasizes the significance of “maintaining natural capital”, a concept on which there is a rapid merging of ecological and economic thinking. We relate this concept to a discussion on sustainability, based on recent attempts to define and clarify what is a sustainable society.
