En 1953, Marcel Minnaert publiait dans le volume The Sun édité par G. P. Kuiper, la principale étude d’ensemble sur la photosphère du soleil écrite au cours des vingt dernières années. Depuis cet article magistral, la connaissance de la photosphère n’a pas changé considérablement. Mais sans doute, d’une façon presque insensible, les points de vue ont changé. L’article de Minnaert, en effet, sépare nettement l’étude de ce que l’on déduit du spectre continu — le modèle de la photosphère — de l’étude des raies, puis de celle de la granulation. Les interactions mutuelles de ces différents domaines, dont l’observation se fait séparément, presque comme s’ils étaient indépendants les uns des autres, sont cependant loin d’être négligeables: La construction d’un modèle, à partir des données de l’observation, doit tenir compte des inhomogénéités; les populations des niveaux, que l’étude des raies prouve être non strictement boltz-manniennes, ne doivent donc pas être supposées telles dans l’interprétation du spectre continu. L’existence de couplages entre les champs de rayonnement et les propriétés locales, entre les champs de vitesse et la structure thermodynamique de l’atmosphère solaire, commandent maintenant les recherches, et si ces études n’ont pas encore abouti à une compréhension totale de la photosphère, du moins à ce changement de point de vue correspond-il aujourd’hui une phase critique des conceptions uselles de la photosphère, une destruction provisoire, prélude à une connaissance améliorée.
