The Theory of the Coronal Spectrum

Abstract

The corona1 is an ionized gas at T ≃ 106 °K. Its base is at a height h ~ 104 km above the photosphere, corresponding to ϱ ≃ 1.01 where ϱ = (R + h)/R . The electron density N e varies from ~ 4 × 108 cm-3 at ϱ = 1.01 to ~ 2 × 106 cm-3 at ϱ = 2. The corona is heated by dissipation of mechanical energy originating in the convection zone.2
