Abstract
The story and the meaning of Spanish efforts to work out just methods of treating the Indians and Indian problems cannot be summed up or easily and confidently “explained”. It was not a simple or easy struggle and there was no decisive victory. Even late in the sixteenth century the Jesuit missionary José de Acosta found not only a diversity of opinion on Indian affairs but also that not a few people doubted whether the Indians could be saved.
