Abstract

The topic of serum protein polymorphism in man and other primates is so vast that any review has to be confined to certain aspects of it. The present review is only concerned with protein polymorphism occurring in healthy individuals, and it will be restricted to some of the main serum proteins that are easily demonstrated by physicochemical and immunological techniques. Enzyme polymorphism will not be included. Two main aspects will be considered: a) proteins where studies of genetically determined variations have given valuable information on general questions concerning genetic control of protein synthesis, and b) polymorphisms that have been reasonably well characterized in man, whereas considerably less is known in the various animal species. These systems appear to be valuable objects for further studies in animals.
