This papery here presented as an Introduction, was delivered by Dr. Smith as the concluding address of the First Spiritual Summit Conference, Calcutta, October 1968. In this its edited form it is dedicated hy Dr. Smith to Thomas Merton whose death a month after the Conference underscored how much his presence there had meant.
