Abstract

Relative to the total size of the individual countries, not including the European part of the Soviet Union, the red fox populates a territory of about 4,738,000 km2. It is not present in Iceland, Crete and on the Balearic Islands. Its ecological prevalence is impressive. In the European highlands the red fox can be found as high as 2,500 m, in the summer months up to 3,500 mNN.
