Melt Rheology and Processing

Processing characteristics are amongst the most important properties of any polymer, and not least of rubber-toughened plastics. In terms of tonnage, injection moulding is the principal method for processing HIPS, ABS, modified PPO and toughened polypropylene. Extrusion ranks second in importance. In both processes the melt rheology of the polymers is a fundamental factor, which controls the quality of the product. Substantial amounts of extruded HIPS and ABS are subsequently thermoformed. The forming process focuses attention upon a rather different aspect of polymer rheology, namely the extensional viscosity and elasticity of the melt. The elastico-viscous behaviour of the polymer above its glass temperature exerts a strong influence upon the choice of processing conditions and the quality of the product in all three of these processes. Measurements of shear viscosity and elongational viscosity together with data on melt elasticity provide the basic information required in any study of moulding, extrusion or thermoforming.
