Summary
In an explorative attempt to establish the relations between criminality and macro-social variables data on 21 predictor variables (e.g. economic, demographic, traffic, mental health and social welfare variables) and 15 criterion variables (e.g. prison population and crime rates) were collected from official statistics. The data over 10 years and 14 countries were analyzed by means of factor analysis, multiple regression analysis and canonical discriminant analysis. Although many results were inconclusive, large differences in relations between countries and years were found and the presence of a general ‘growth factor’ is suggested.
