Overzicht

Abstract

The humanist Nicolaus Clenardus (also known as Cleynaerts and Beken) was born at Diest and studied Latin, Greek and Hebrew at the Collegium Trilingue in Louvain. The college, an idea of Erasmus’s, was founded by Hieronymus Busleyden in 1520 to further knowledge of the three biblical languages, indispensable for the study of the Bible and divinity. Later Clenardus himself was to give lessons in the three languages. He also wanted to master Arabic, and to this end betook himself to Granada and Fez. He was never to see Louvain again, for he died in Granada in 1542, not yet fifty years old.
