Abstract
Both vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and motilin are candidate hormones of the gut1. Both are released by acid in the duodenum in man2,3 and dog4,5. Only for motilin were stimulated endogenous serum levels comparable to those seen after motilin infusion resulting in motor effects of the gut6,7. Thus motilin may well become an established gut hormone.
