Migrating myoelectrical complexes: disruption, enhancement and disorganization

  • Chapter
Gastrointestinal Motility in Health and Disease

Abstract

Migrating myoelectrical complexes (M MC) first identified in the small intestine of the fasted dog as ‘a caudad-moving band of large-amplitude potentials’1 have been recorded in several other species including rats, guinea-pigs, rabbits, pigs, cattle and horses2. They have been also observed to operate in the human duodenum on the basis of mechanica13,4 and electrical recordings5.
