The Reform of Family Law in the Scandinavian Countries

Abstract

During this century there has been very comprehensive collaboration in legislative work between the Nordic (Scandinavian) countries. Marriage law is one of the fields where such collaboration has occurred between Sweden, Denmark and Norway, with the result that as lately as a few years ago, the legislation in these three countries was rather similar. As matters stand now, however, there is a wind of change blowing and probably in the near future there will be greater differences than before. As a matter of fact, there are at present great differences between the Swedish legislation on the one hand and the Danish and Norwegian legislations on the other. This is because Sweden has already accomplished some new reforms in this field while, for instance, Denmark is still at the planning stage. But in relation to the field of matrimonial property, Sweden too is at the planning stage.
